Questions:
Answers:
- What is lost wax
casting?
An original pattern is produced and a mould is
made around it. We use this mould to make wax copies of the original design.
These waxes are then encased in a special plaster-like substance. Once this
plaster has set, the wax can be melted out, producing a cavity. The cavity is
then filled with molten metal, which solidifies to create the casting.
- Why is it called
lost wax casting?
The term lost wax refers to the fact that
the wax is lost from the plaster mould, when it is melted out.
Similarly, after pouring the molten bronze, the casting is found
in the mould. [and hence, the term foundry].
- Can you work from
my pattern/drawing/photo?
Yes. If you have a three-dimensional pattern to
work from (a doorknob, for example) then we can make an exact replica.
We also have a skilled team of modellers, who are frequently asked to work from
paper designs, photos or even just a description. Our researchers can uncover
designs from any era and our designers can produce designs that are complementary
to any style.
- Can you cast in
steel?
We do not cast in steel. We do, however, produce wax
patterns for a steel foundry. If your project requires any steel parts, then
we can arrange for them to be made to your specification.
